South Africa has one of the smallest gender pay gaps among freelance workers on major global online platforms.

This, according to a new international report by Remitly, which analysed the hourly rates of more than 58,000 freelancers on the Upwork platform across different countries and job categories.

Remitly is a US-founded financial technology company that provides international money transfers and cross-border payment services.

The study found that women globally charge about 19% less per hour than men for similar freelance work.

In South Africa, the gap is much smaller at just 3.9%. Women freelancers earn an average of $34.26 per hour, compared to $35.64 for men. The country is ranked second in the world for freelancer pay equality in the study.

The report also estimates South Africa’s “Freelancer Equal Pay Day” at January 15.

This means women would need to work about two extra weeks into the year to earn the same as men over 12 months.

However, the report shows big differences between types of work

Where women still earn less

In several technical and support-related roles, women continue to charge lower average hourly rates than men:

  • Computer Vision (AI) freelancers: women charge 35.1% less than men on average
  • Customer Service Representatives: 29.8% less
  • Data Engineers (AI): 18.4% less
  • Project Managers: 16.1% less

Where women charge more

In contrast, some consulting and marketing-related roles show women earning higher average hourly rates than men:

  • Business Consultants: women charge 62.1% more than men
  • Management Consultants: 55.6% more
  • Email Marketing Consultants: 52.0% more
  • Marketing Consultants: 45.1% more
