For Quentin Faltain, entrepreneurship was never simply about starting a business. It was about creating stability, opportunity and a future after experiencing some of the uncertainty that comes with losing employment.

Today, Faltain is the founder and managing director of CQC Business Solutions, an integrated workplace solutions provider that has evolved from an office furniture manufacturer into a company offering workspace planning, manufacturing, refurbishment, repairs and customised workplace environments.

The journey began decades earlier in Queenstown in the Eastern Cape, where Faltain grew up watching his parents build their own businesses.

His father, a qualified carpenter, operated Kido’s Joinery, while his mother ran Judy’s Hair Salon. Their work ethic and determination shaped his understanding of business from a young age.

"My parents taught me the importance of perseverance, integrity, customer service and building a trusted reputation," Faltain said.

Those lessons would become the foundation of his own entrepreneurial journey.

After completing his schooling in Queenstown, Faltain pursued further education through Queenstown Technical College, where he studied Computer Practice and Personnel Management.

He later expanded his skills through studies in production management, management studies and eventually completed an MBA specialising in entrepreneurship.

His professional career began at Servistar DIY before he entered the office furniture and seating industry, a sector where he would build more than 27 years of experience.

However, despite his experience and commitment, his career was tested by repeated setbacks.

Faltain was retrenched three times, in 2010, 2016 and 2021.

Rather than allowing those experiences to define him, they became the catalyst for building his own future.

"The idea of starting my own business had already begun forming after my first retrenchment," he said.

"By the time the third retrenchment occurred, I had mentally prepared myself to take control of my future."

That decision led to the creation of CQC Business Solutions, with the company name carrying a personal meaning.

The business was named using the initials of his three children, Calista, Quinn and Caylah.

Launching the company required courage and sacrifice. Faltain invested a significant portion of his pension funds into the business and used short term loans to support operations.

He also relied heavily on his industry knowledge, relationships and reputation to secure opportunities.

A major turning point came after reconnecting with a former supplier and customer at a golf day.

That relationship resulted in a contract to manufacture more than 2 700 chairs, providing the momentum needed to establish CQC in a competitive industry.

"Failure was simply not an option," Faltain said.

"I knew what it felt like to face uncertainty and instability, and that became one of the driving forces behind making the business succeed."

As the business grew, Faltain recognised that customers were looking for more than furniture. They needed flexible, cost effective and sustainable workplace solutions.

This led CQC to expand beyond manufacturing into a broader offering that includes office furniture production, workspace planning, seating solutions, refurbishment, repairs, reupholstery and customised workplace environments.

"The business evolved because we listened to our customers," he said.

"Businesses were looking for solutions rather than simply purchasing products, and we wanted to position ourselves as a company that could adapt and deliver what clients truly needed."

Several opportunities helped accelerate the company’s growth, including changes within the industry that created gaps in the market.

Faltain’s ability to identify these opportunities, combined with his technical knowledge and established relationships, helped CQC secure larger contracts across both the public and private sectors.

Faltain believes successful leadership requires more than technical expertise. It requires empathy, adaptability and the ability to continue learning.

"Successful leadership requires resilience, humility and the ability to continuously evolve within an ever changing business environment," he said.

Beyond commercial success, empowerment and social impact remain central to CQC’s vision.

Faltain believes businesses have a responsibility to contribute positively to society through job creation, skills development and creating opportunities for others.

Through employment opportunities, mentorship, skills transfer and partnerships with local suppliers, CQC continues to support economic participation within communities.

The company also contributes to community initiatives, including support for local churches and future projects aimed at assisting vulnerable individuals.

Sustainability has become another important focus area for CQC.

Through its refurbishment and lifecycle extension model, the company restores and extends the lifespan of office furniture rather than replacing products unnecessarily.

Faltain believes this approach provides customers with more affordable options while reducing waste and supporting local manufacturing.

"The refurbishment model allows us to offer clients a cost effective and environmentally responsible solution," he said.

"It extends product life, reduces waste and supports sustainable business practices within South Africa."

Looking ahead, Faltain aims to continue growing CQC Business Solutions nationally while maintaining its commitment to service excellence, innovation, empowerment and sustainability.

His goal is to build a proudly South African company that creates employment opportunities, develops future leaders and leaves a lasting impact on the workplace solutions industry.
