The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has outlined what it expects from South Africans during the 2026 filing season, as it continues to expand its use of digital systems and auto-assessments.

IOL previously reported that the  Revenue Service (SARS) has confirmed the key dates for the 2026 tax filing season, alongside a set of system changes aimed at making tax submissions faster and more straightforward for individuals.

Key 2026 tax filing deadlines

  • Auto Assessments: 1 July to 12 July 2026
  • Non-provisional individuals: 13 July to 23 October 2026
  • Provisional taxpayers: 13 July 2026 to 22 January 2027
  • Trusts: 13 July 2026 to 22 January 2027

Speaking during the launch of the filing season, Makhubu said tax compliance is a shared responsibility between SARS and taxpayers.

"Our aspiration is simple yet transformative in this filing season to make tax compliance seamless, almost invisible in the lives of compliant taxpayers," Makhubo said.

"What does SARS expect from taxpayers? I think it's important that I reflect on this. The filing season journey is a shared responsibility between SARS and the taxpayers and all other role players".

What SARS expects from taxpayers:

  • Ensure personal and banking details are up to date
  • Respond to official SARS communication timeously
  • Submit accurate and complete information where required
  • Use digital channels such as eFiling and the SARS MobiApp where possible
  • Prepare supporting documentation in advance if not auto-assessed
  • Be alert to scams and only engage with official SARS platforms and communication
  • Avoid delaying submissions to prevent penalties and interest

Makhubu also cautioned taxpayers against comparing themselves with others during the auto-assessment rollout.

"We normally see that when somebody on the 2nd of July has experienced a neighbour who has gotten a message on auto-assessment, they also expect that they should have gotten the message, and then it becomes quite a hurried, nervous rush to go to SARS to say, But my neighbour got their auto-assessment, why not me".

"As I said, 6 million, you cannot process all of those at once. It's important to batch them. Just give us the time between the 1st and the 12th of July"
