Inside the viral $850m Obama Center: From a real-scale Oval Office to Michelle’s fashion

Social media was abuzz on Thursday, June 18, with footage of heartfelt speeches delivered by Barack Obama, the 44th US President and the first African-American to hold the office, and former first lady Michelle Obama during the Chicago, Illinois, unveiling of the Obama Presidential Center.

Their mutual celebration during this historic journey truly tugged at everyone's heartstrings, creating a legacy that is now permanently etched in history for all future generations to admire.

When discussing the pinnacle of partnership, this power couple undeniably established an aspirational standard.

The guest list that out-glammed the White House

In attendance at the event were numerous past US presidents and their spouses, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, George W. and Laura Bush, and Joe and Dr Jill Biden.

It also drew an array of international dignitaries and political heavyweights, such as former German chancellor Angela Merkel and former vice president Kamala Harris, who attended with Doug Emhoff. Other notable guests included former Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi and former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.

The audience featured a collection of cultural icons and high-profile personalities, including the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks alongside Rita Wilson, and late-night staples David Letterman, Stephen Colbert, and Conan O'Brien. Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union also joined the distinguished crowd.

The event showcased a series of musical performances from renowned artists, featuring Marc Anthony delivering "Vivir Mi Vida", Common and John Legend collaborating on "Glory" (with Legend's performance serving as a tribute to Donny Hathaway), and Christina Aguilera offering a rendition of "What a Wonderful World". 

Additionally, Jenner Hudson sang the US national anthem, Bruce Springsteen performed "Land of Hope and Dreams," and Stevie Wonder took to the stage with "All I Do”.

The 11-year blueprint: Tracing the long road to the opening

It was in May 2015 when President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama shared the momentous news through the Obama Foundation. 

Construction of the landmark campus in Chicago's Jackson Park officially commenced in August 2021.

However, the ambitious undertaking navigated multiple years of initial setbacks stemming from federal reviews and various legal hurdles.

The inaugural ceremony was held on June 18, and on June 19, the entire campus opened for full public access.

Part museum, part community hub, total power move

This $850 million (R14bn) privately funded complex serves as a museum, library and community gathering space, commemorating the legacy of Barack Obama. 

What you will find at the Obama Presidential Center:

• The museum: an immersive space exploring the Obamas' personal journeys, from the 2008 campaign trail through their transformative two terms. Visitors can marvel at a wealth of commissioned artworks here.
• The Chicago Public Library branch on-site includes the President’s Reading Room, which is filled with a collection of books personally chosen by the Obamas.
• The campus features recreational and outdoor areas, including high-end playgrounds, a sledding hill, a vegetable garden modelled after the one at the White House, and a basketball court that meets NBA regulation standards.

Four floors of history, hype and high fashion

• Visitors can explore the 2008 campaign trail through grassroots volunteer recordings and exhibits on the historical movements that paved the way for the presidency.
• Have you ever imagined yourself in the Oval Office? Well, now you can experience a life-sized recreation of the space as it appeared throughout the Obama presidency.
• The collection features his Nobel Peace Prize, significant historical artefacts, and various items from his childhood. 
• Fashion enthusiasts can explore a specialised exhibit featuring the First Lady's most memorable garments, such as her ensemble from the 2009 Inauguration.
• Art lovers can enjoy 28 commissioned, location-specific pieces throughout the grounds, including an evocative glass installation by Julie Mehretu titled "Uprising of the Sun" and a standout painting from Idris Khan.
• Situated at the summit, The Sky Room provides sweeping views of Lake Michigan, Jackson Park, and the city skyline.
