South Africa, and especially Cape Town, has a habit of making visitors do something locals sometimes forget to do: stop and appreciate where they are.

Over the past few weeks alone, we've seen everyone from comedian Deon Cole hilariously trying to process Cape Town's beauty to actress Shannon Elizabeth reminding her followers why South Africa has become one of the most meaningful places in her life.

Elizabeth, who played Nadia in the 1999 comedy classic "American Pie", recently shared her love for a country she says has changed her in ways she never expected.

“One of my favorite places in South Africa,” she wrote.

But Elizabeth’s post was not simply about a beautiful destination. It was about the personal impact the country has had on her.

“There’s something about being here that instantly makes me slow down, breathe a little deeper, and appreciate how beautiful this country truly is,” she wrote.

It is a feeling many visitors seem to experience when they spend time in South Africa.

Beyond the places people come to see, there is the culture, the people and the experiences that often become the memories they take home.

Elizabeth reflected on the journey she has had with the country, sharing: “South Africa has changed my life in so many ways. It has challenged me, inspired me, broken my heart at times, and filled it in ways I never expected.”

It is a powerful description of a place that is rarely one-dimensional. South Africa has a way of offering moments of joy, lessons, surprises and sometimes even difficult conversations, all while bringing people from different backgrounds together.

Locals may sometimes forget how unique that experience is because we are busy navigating everyday life.

We know the frustrations that come with living here, but visitors often remind us of the things that make the country stand out, from its diversity and creativity to the warmth of its communities.

Elizabeth added that she “can’t imagine” her life without South Africa now, showing just how deeply the country has become connected to her personal story.

She ended her message by sharing her gratitude for moments like these and for reminders of “just how magical this place really is.”

And judging by the number of celebrities who keep sharing their love for Cape Town, it seems the Mother City has another talent besides looking good in photos.

It knows how to make people feel at home. Now if only finding an actual home here was as easy as falling in love with the city...
