South Africa's leading female jockey, Rachel Venniker, is set for another opportunity to make history when she lines up in the 2026 Hollywoodbets Durban July at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday.
The 24-year-old will partner Choisaanada, trained by Erico Verdonesse, after earning a place in the prestigious 2,200m race. The middle-distance gelding is regarded as a stamina specialist, with Venniker's patient riding style expected to suit the horse's racing profile.
Venniker first made history in 2024 when she became the first female jockey to compete in the Hollywoodbets Durban July aboard reserve runner Hluhluwe. Her journey to the country's biggest horse racing event, however, has been filled with setbacks.
She was originally booked to ride Red Saxon in the 2022 edition before suffering a concussion in a race-day accident just days before the event, forcing her withdrawal. The following year, the horse she was due to ride failed to make the final field.
Reflecting on the heartbreaking 2022 incident, Venniker previously said:
"On the Monday prior to the 2022 July, my filly in the last race fly jumped coming out of the stalls and I hit my head on top of the starting gate. They booked me off for concussion which is the standard 10-day procedure. I was mortified. But you've just got to carry on."
Her career has been defined by resilience.
Born and raised at Summerveld in KwaZulu-Natal, Venniker has been riding horses since she was four years old. Although she dreamed of becoming a jockey from an early age, she initially struggled to gain admission to the South African Jockey Academy because she was considered too tall.
With the support of former champion jockey and trainer Michael "Muis" Roberts, she eventually secured her place and went on to become champion apprentice in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons before graduating to senior jockey ranks.
She has since established herself as one of South Africa's top riders, recording 209 career victories and 644 top-three finishes.
Venniker has also impressed on the international stage. In February 2024, she won on her first ride at the International Jockeys Challenge in Saudi Arabia, finishing ahead of several internationally acclaimed female jockeys.
Later that year, she made her debut in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot, where she celebrated victory on her first mount before adding a second and third-place finish while representing the Rest of the World team.
Another major obstacle came in April 2025 when she broke her leg in a freak training accident at Summerveld. Despite the injury, she successfully rehabilitated and returned to racing, adding more victories at several tracks, including Hollywoodbets Greyville.
Known for her disciplined work ethic, Venniker begins her mornings at the track from 4am before following a strict gym routine to maintain peak fitness.
She hopes her achievements will inspire more young women to pursue careers in horse racing.
"If you really want to, never give up. There are going to be hard times. This is not an easy career. People have seen my success but it comes with a lot of work. It's tough physically, mentally, emotionally but it's also really worth it and I love it," she said.
Now, with another Hollywoodbets Durban July opportunity in front of her, Venniker will once again attempt to write her name into South African racing history.
