There was a time when treating the family to burgers was an affordable weeknight meal. These days, with food prices continuing to climb, even a quick takeaway burger can put a noticeable dent in the budget.

Store-bought burger patties have also become increasingly expensive, making homemade alternatives more appealing than ever.

The good news is that making your own beef burger patties at home is surprisingly simple.

Not only can it save money, but it also gives you complete control over what goes into your food.

Beef mince is one of those freezer staples that many households already keep on hand because it is versatile, economical and can be transformed into a variety of meals.

With a few extra ingredients, it can also become the foundation of a juicy homemade burger.

Once your patties are ready, the fun really begins. Keep things classic with lettuce, tomato and cheese, or load them up with caramelised onions, crispy bacon, avocado, pickles and your favourite sauces.

Served on toasted buns, these homemade burgers are guaranteed to become a family favourite.

Homemade beef burger patties

Ingredients

  • 500g beef mince
  • 50g breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped or grated
  • 3 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon sun-dried tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon fresh marjoram, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • A little oil for brushing
  • Burger buns and toppings of your choice, to serve

Method

  • Place the beef mince, breadcrumbs, onion, parsley, Dijon mustard, sun-dried tomato paste, marjoram and egg into a large mixing bowl. Season generously with salt and pepper.
  • Using clean hands, gently combine the ingredients until evenly mixed. Avoid overworking the mixture, as this can result in dense burger patties.
  • Divide the mixture into six equal portions. Lightly wet your hands and shape each portion into a round patty.
  • Brush each patty lightly with oil and place on a plate.
  • Heat a grill pan, frying pan or braai over medium heat. Cook the patties for about two to three minutes per side, depending on thickness and your preferred level of doneness.
  • Avoid pressing down on the patties while they cook, as this can force out the juices and dry them out.
  • Serve on toasted burger buns with your favourite toppings and sauces.
