Dessert lovers looking for easy winter comfort food might be surprised by what an air fryer can do.

Air fryer dessert recipes have become increasingly popular as more South Africans use the versatile appliance for far more than crispy chips and quick weeknight dinners.

One of the biggest advantages of making desserts in an air fryer is convenience. It heats up faster than a conventional oven, uses less electricity and is ideal for smaller batches when you don't want to bake a full tray of treats.

The compact cooking space also helps desserts bake evenly, making it easier to achieve delicious results with minimal effort.

Whether you're craving a rich chocolate brownie, a warm apple crumble or a nostalgic bread pudding, these air fryer dessert recipes prove that comfort food doesn't have to be complicated.

They're perfect for cosy evenings at home, weekend treats and those moments when only something sweet will do.

Fudgy Chocolate Brownies

Rich, chocolatey and irresistibly gooey in the centre, these brownies are the ultimate treat for serious chocolate lovers.

Ingredients

  • 100g chocolate, divided (50g melted and 50g chopped)
  • 115g butter, melted
  • 120g brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 5ml vanilla essence
  • 60g cake flour
  • 15g cocoa powder
  • 2.5ml salt

Method

Melt 50g of the chocolate and set aside to cool slightly.

In a mixing bowl, combine the melted butter and brown sugar. Add the egg and vanilla essence and whisk until smooth and glossy.

Stir in the melted chocolate, then gently fold in the flour, cocoa powder and salt. Add the remaining chopped chocolate and mix until evenly distributed.

Pour the batter into a lined 15cm square baking tin. Cover loosely with foil and place in the air fryer.

Bake at 180°C for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking at 170°C for a further 10 minutes.

Allow the brownies to cool before slicing and serving.

Apple Crumble

This simple single-serving dessert combines tender cinnamon-spiced apples with a buttery crumble topping for a quick and comforting sweet treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 apple, diced
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 6 tsp butter, divided and melted
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon, divided
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar, divided

Method

Place the diced apple into a small ovenproof dish.

Add 15ml brown sugar and half of the cinnamon, then mix well. Stir in 5ml melted butter and combine thoroughly.

In a separate bowl, mix the flour, remaining brown sugar, remaining cinnamon and the rest of the melted butter until a crumbly texture forms.

Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples and place the dish into the air fryer.

Cook at 200°C for 15 minutes until the topping is golden and the apples are soft.

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce

Soft, fragrant and topped with a silky vanilla sauce, this classic bread pudding is the kind of dessert that never goes out of style.

Ingredients

For the bread pudding

  • 4 slices white bread
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp or margarine
  • 1 tbsp vanilla essence
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 60ml sugar
  • Raisins, to taste

For the vanilla sauce

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp cornflour
  • 3 - 4 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 1 tbsp butter or margarine

Method

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, butter, vanilla essence, cinnamon and sugar until well combined.

Cut the bread into cubes and add them to the mixture. Stir through the raisins and allow the bread to soak for about 10 minutes.

Preheat the air fryer to 170°C for three minutes.

Transfer the bread mixture to a greased ovenproof dish and cook for approximately 20 minutes at 170°C until set and lightly golden.

While the pudding is cooking, prepare the vanilla sauce. Place the milk, cornflour, sugar, vanilla essence and butter into a saucepan over medium heat.

Stir continuously until the sauce thickens and becomes smooth and creamy.

Pour the warm vanilla sauce over the bread pudding and serve immediately. For an extra indulgent touch, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
