The FIFA World Cup knockout stages are packed with heavyweight clashes, but one potential fixture already stands head and shoulders above the rest.
If both Spain and Portugal win their respective round-of-32 ties this week, the Iberian neighbours will collide in the round of 16 in what promises to be one of the matches of the entire tournament. Stacked with elite, world-class talent, the potential showdown would feature some of global football's biggest names.
Spain's exciting young generation, spearheaded by Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Gavi, and Rodri, would come up against Portugal's potent blend of veteran experience and attacking flair, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leão, and João Neves. Spain face Austria on Thursday knowing another patient, highly disciplined opponent awaits them. De la Fuente has repeatedly urged his squad to focus entirely on the immediate challenge rather than looking ahead at potential brackets.

That tactical result handed Portugal arguably the toughest path through the entire knockout phase. Martínez, however, firmly believes the group-stage setback could prove incredibly valuable for his players.
"This match really helps us to make crucial tactical adjustments and alignments, and ensures we are far better prepared for what we have to do in this World Cup moving forward," he reflected after the Colombia stalemate.
Should both European giants progress, football fans will be treated to a contest overflowing with technical brilliance, tactical intelligence, and individual star power. The winner of the tie would instantly become one of the outright favourites to reach the semi-finals, whilst the loser would see their World Cup dream end far earlier than expected.
For the neutrals, it remains the blockbuster matchup everyone wants to see. All that remains is for Spain and Portugal to navigate one more game and officially set the stage for a modern World Cup classic.
