In a first for South Africa's retail sector, Petshop Science has partnered with OUTsurance to offer free accidental pet insurance to qualifying customers, a move aimed at helping pet owners manage the rising costs of emergency veterinary care.

The initiative comes at a time when household budgets remain under pressure and unexpected veterinary expenses can place significant financial strain on families.

South Africa is home to an estimated 7.4 million dogs and two million cats, according to Statistics South Africa data, yet only a small percentage of pet owners have insurance cover for their animals.

Under the new offering, Petshop Science Xtra Savings members who spend R1 000 or more in store or through Sixty60 in a month will qualify for one month of free accidental pet cover of up to R10 000 for either a dog or cat.

The cover is activated through the retailer's WhatsApp channel and begins on the first day of the following month after customers meet the qualifying spending threshold.

The benefit is limited to one pet per month and applies to specific accidental events outlined in the policy terms and conditions.

Trevor Paxton, General Manager of Petshop Science, said the initiative was designed to make pet care more affordable and accessible for South African families.

"Pets are an important part of family life for millions of South Africans. When accidents happen, the last thing owners should have to worry about is how they will pay for emergency treatment. This partnership helps make accidental cover more accessible and gives pet parents greater peace of mind," said Paxton.

The retailer believes the offering addresses a significant gap in the market, particularly as veterinary costs continue to rise and consumers face mounting financial pressures from higher living expenses.

In addition to the free accidental cover, Petshop Science customers can access a range of pet insurance products underwritten by OUTsurance, with premiums starting from R69 per month.

Existing policyholders who qualify for the free cover benefit will also receive a R50 discount on their next insurance premium for each qualifying month.

The insurance offering forms part of Petshop Science's broader growth strategy as it continues to expand its footprint across the country.

Since launching in 2021, the retailer has grown rapidly to 174 stores nationwide, making it one of South Africa's fastest growing pet retail chains.

The company further strengthened its market presence in 2025 through a partnership with Sixty60, enabling customers to access same day delivery of pet food, treats, toys and other pet care products.

Industry observers say the introduction of free accidental pet cover could help drive greater awareness of pet insurance among South Africans, many of whom remain uninsured despite the growing costs associated with pet ownership.

With millions of households viewing pets as part of the family, the initiative may also encourage consumers to consider broader pet insurance options as part of their household financial planning.

For Petshop Science, the move represents an opportunity to deepen customer loyalty while offering practical support to pet owners facing an increasingly challenging economic environment.
