The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has said that taxpayers due for refunds during this year’s filing season can expect quicker payments, with eligible refunds of R100 or more being processed automatically within around 72 hours once an assessment is completed.
The tax season officially kicks off on Wednesday, with auto-assessments marking the start of the filing period as millions of taxpayers are given access to their pre-populated returns.
The revenue service said that the early phase is expected to see high system traffic, but the process is designed to make refunds faster and reduce delays for compliant taxpayers.
"Refunds of R100 or more will be paid automatically within 72 hours. Refunds of less than R100 will be added to your account and paid out when your account balance exceeds R100," SARS said.
The revenue service added that taxpayers can also check their refund status and account details through SARS digital platforms, including eFiling and the SARS MobiApp, as the filing season gets underway.
"You can find out your refund status on WhatsApp (0800 11 7277),SARS MobiApp, or by dialling *134*7277#." SARS said.
IOL previously reported that the revenue Service (SARS) has introduced a new online "Waiting Room" to help taxpayers access their auto assessment results during the busy filing season.
"SARS has introduced a Limited Functionality Webpage, referred to as the 'Waiting Room', to support taxpayers during the Auto Assessment period," the revenue service said.
"During this time, the eFiling platform experiences increased traffic, as many Individual taxpayers log in to check their Auto Assessment status ahead of the official start of Filing Season. To ensure a smoother and more stable experience for all users, the Waiting Room will help reduce pressure on the core eFiling system."
Eligible taxpayers can securely view their Auto Assessment results in read-only mode via the Waiting Room.
This ensures continued access to important information, even during peak periods of high demand.
The Waiting Room is available exclusively to Individual eFiling users during peak Auto Assessment periods.
