Eskom has successfully finalised the leasing process for five of its historically significant steam locomotives. This follows an open tender process that commenced on 18 May 2024, aimed at preserving the country’s rail heritage. During a handover ceremony at Eskom Rotek Industries, the energy giant announced New Cape Central Railway Ltd as the successful bidder.
Eskom Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane, emphasised the organisation's commitment to protecting its valuable heritage assets.
“At Eskom, we acknowledge our duty not only to deliver electricity but also to safeguard the valuable heritage assets entrusted to us. By opting for a lease arrangement rather than a sale, Eskom retains custodianship of these assets, affirming its commitment to heritage preservation as a proudly South African company,” he said.

This lease agreement aligns with this year’s theme for Heritage Month, “Reimagine Heritage Institutions for a New Era”. By collaborating with a qualified heritage organisation, Eskom aims to ensure that these locomotives are preserved and continuously operational. The process involved substantial consultation with the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) and the Heritage Railway Association of South Africa (HRASA), which provided guidance in adhering to national heritage standards.
The locomotives, previously housed at the South African National Rail and Steam Museum (SANRASM) in Krugersdorp, were meant for restoration and public exhibition before Eskom retrieved them from the museum, which is now defunct. The leasing agreement marks a significant step toward securing a new future for these cherished symbols of South Africa’s rail industry.
