In a display of culinary mastery, provincial cricketer, Lindley Hendricks, has claimed the prestigious title of 2024 Capegate Braai Challenge champion.
It was Hendricks’ first time entering the competition, which made his victory even sweeter. Our own regional news editor, Quinton Mtyala, was on hand to taste the winning recipe.
Ten semi-finalists battled it out over three tough rounds, but despite the pressure, Hendricks remained composed, crediting his calmness to the vibrant atmosphere.
"At first, there was a lot of pressure, but once I got into the rhythm, and with the help of the background music I was able get into the swing of things – it’s very different to playing cricket though," he shared with a smile.
His winning dish was a bold creation that pushed his own boundaries: a Basil Pesto & Mozzarella Stuffed Rump Roulade Burger with Mac & Cheese, Red Pepper, Peri Peri Aioli, and a Side of Fries.
Surprisingly, it was also the first time he had ever cooked that meal.
"I never thought I would get to the final round let alone win," said Hendricks. "I had to improvise a bit, but it all came together in the end". Hendricks is no stranger to high-stakes environments, but this win has given him a fresh wave of confidence.
"The feeling hasn’t stopped yet. It’s a great feeling to know you've won something in life. This has given me the confidence to experiment more, push the boundaries, and go beyond my expectations with my cooking skills."
Zoë Ganz, Capegate’s marketing manager, said that this year had seen a bumper crop of entries.
“There’s no doubt South Africans can cook especially around the fire. It was a tough call this year as the standards were even higher, but in the end, there was a clear winner. That Lindley had never cooked that before, was also just incredible and shows his real talent.”
Agreeing, Mtyala remarked: “This is the second time I’ve had the privilege of judging this competition, and It’s incredible how creative and flavour-packed all the entries were. I’m inspired for this coming Braai Day, and I know what I’ll be cooking. Well done Lindley and everyone who participated – what an awesome achievement.”
Hendricks’ victory has earned him a variety of fantastic prizes, which include a weekend away for two (including a spa voucher), R5 000 Capegate Gift card and fantastic prizes from Woolworths, Pick 'n Pay, Rocomamas, Outdoor & Velocity, Montagu Fruit & Nuts and more.
With Heritage Day and National Braai Day on Tuesday, Hendricks is expecting a bumper guest list all keen to taste the winning recipe.
Hendricks’ mantra, "It’s not done until you do it“, perfectly captures the spirit of his journey. He hopes to inspire others to take a chance on their passion, whether it’s braaing, cricket, or any other pursuit, and ”to have the self-belief that you can do anything if you put your mind to it”.
As the 2024 Capegate Braai Challenge champion, Lindley Hendricks has shown that with a little courage and a lot of flavour, anything is possible.
