Johannesburg - Four buffalo bulls were released into the Dinokeng Game Reserve near Hammanskraal, creating the first 'Big Five' park in Gauteng, Beeld reported on Wednesday.

“After ten years of planning, we made this dream a reality,” Etienne Toerien, chairman of the Dinokeng management committee told Beeld.

The bulls belonged to the Mokgale municipality but up until a few days ago were kept in a boma at the Emerald Casino in Vanderbijlpark.

The bulls were released on Monday.

Mokgale municipality inherited the animals when it took over the management of the Krugersdorp Game Reserve.

The largest and oldest of the bulls had been fitted with a satellite tracking device to facilitate monitoring of the herd, which would soon be a lot larger.

Around 30 buffalo from among others the Rietvlei Nature Reserve in Pretoria, a private reserve in Uitenhage and the Addo elephant park in the Eastern Cape would be brought to Dinokeng. - Sapa
