A dream safari quickly became a nightmare for a group of tourists when an elephant came right up to their open vehicle, poking passengers with its trunk and leaving one man clutching its tusk.

The dramatic moment, captured on video and shared by Eugene Kruger on social media, has racked up more than 740,000 views as viewers watch in disbelief while the massive animal approaches an open safari vehicle packed with passengers.

For many visitors, a safari is a bucket-list experience and a chance to see Africa's iconic wildlife in its natural habitat. Spotting a lion lounging in the shade, a leopard resting in a tree or a giraffe strolling across the bushveld is usually the highlight of the day.

Few, however, expect an elephant's tusks to come within touching distance.

The now-viral clip shows the elephant walking directly up to the open vehicle before reaching inside with its trunk. As panic spreads among the passengers, some are seen trying to move away from the animal while others remain frozen in place.

At one point, one of the elephant's tusks makes contact with a passenger, while another person is seen holding onto the tusk in what looks like an attempt to create some space between themselves and the animal.

Adding to the tension, a second elephant can be seen approaching from behind the vehicle.

Although someone repeatedly urges the group to stay calm and remain seated, the passengers appear increasingly distressed as the encounter unfolds.

"One Italian is off!" a woman can be heard shouting during the commotion.

The situation takes an even more alarming turn when the guide informs the group that the vehicle is not starting.

"Just sit still," he says. "The car is not starting."

Moments later, the elephant is seen rummaging through the vehicle and helping itself to items inside, including what appear to be cans.

With one elephant beside the vehicle and another drawing closer, the group eventually decides they have little choice but to get out.

"We need to move, guys," one man is heard saying.

Another passenger urgently tells a fellow tourist, "Get off, Claire. Get the f**k off now. Please!"

The confused visitors then begin climbing out of the vehicle, seemingly unsure where they should go as the tense situation continues.

The video ends abruptly before viewers get to see how the encounter was resolved, leaving many people in the comments section asking for an update.

South Africa's safari destinations are renowned for offering some of the world's best wildlife experiences, attracting visitors from across the globe every year.

Among them, Kruger National Park remains one of the country's biggest tourist draws, famed for its Big Five sightings and unforgettable encounters with nature.

For the tourists in this viral video, however, the wildlife experience may have been a little closer than they bargained for.
