Hermanus is about to become even easier to visit this winter as City Sightseeing South Africa launches a new guided day tour to one of the country's most-loved coastal destinations during whale season.

Starting from 2 July, travellers will be able to join the new Hermanus Explorer Tour, which will operate every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from Cape Town.

The launch comes just as southern right whales begin returning to the Western Cape coastline, marking the start of one of South Africa's most spectacular natural events.

For many South Africans, winter in the Western Cape means one thing: whale watching.

Every year, thousands of visitors head to Hermanus in the hope of spotting these gentle giants as they migrate to the warmer waters of the Cape to breed and calve.

The seaside town has built an international reputation as one of the best places in the world for land-based whale watching.

Between July and November, whales can often be seen from the shoreline, making Hermanus a favourite destination for both local and international travellers.

The new City Sightseeing tour is designed to make the journey simple and stress-free. Guests can sit back and enjoy a scenic coastal drive from Cape Town before spending time exploring Hermanus at their own pace.

The route itself is part of the experience. With dramatic ocean views, rugged coastline, and charming seaside scenery along the way, the drive offers a reminder of why the Western Cape remains one of South Africa's most popular road-trip destinations.

Once in Hermanus, visitors will have free time to wander through the town's streets, browse boutique shops, enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants or take a stroll along the famous cliff paths overlooking Walker Bay.

Travellers can also choose between two distinctly Cape experiences. Wine lovers can opt for a wine tasting and cellar tour, while those wanting to get closer to the action can book an optional boat-based whale watching excursion.

The launch is expected to appeal to both first-time visitors and regular travellers to Hermanus.

For those without access to a vehicle, or anyone wanting to avoid the hassle of planning a day trip, the guided tour offers a convenient way to enjoy one of the Western Cape's biggest winter attractions.

Whale sightings typically increase as the season progresses, with August, September and October often regarded as some of the best months for viewing.

As a result, Hermanus is once again expected to attract large numbers of visitors eager to witness the annual migration.

While summer often steals the spotlight when it comes to coastal holidays, many locals believe winter is actually one of the best times to visit Hermanus.

The arrival of the whales, cooler temperatures and dramatic ocean scenery create an atmosphere that is completely different from the busy summer season.
