New cruise ship headed to South Africa for 2026 cruise season: Tips for first time cruisers

A fresh wave of excitement is set to sweep through South Africa’s cruise industry as MSC Cruises announces the arrival of a new ship for the 2026/2027 cruising season. 

The MSC Armonia will make its debut in South African waters, marking a significant expansion of the company’s local fleet and offering travellers new routes, destinations, and on-board experiences to look forward to.

Last season over 90,000 South Africans cruised South African waters and over 2000 jobs were created for locals.

The season officially sets sail on 27 November 2026, with more than 30 departures scheduled from both the Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal in Durban and the Cape Town Cruise Terminal. 

Cruising options

Voyages will range from two-night mini breaks to 12-night cruises, taking passengers to some of the most scenic destinations in the region.

Among the highlights are stops at Portuguese Island and Pomene in Mozambique, Walvis Bay in Namibia, and Port Louis in Mauritius, with the annual New Year’s cruise making a festive call at La Possession in Réunion.

“Bringing MSC Armonia to the country for the first time and giving new and regular travellers alike the opportunity to experience this amazing vessel is very exciting for us,” said Ross Volk, Managing Director of MSC Cruises South Africa.

“The ship has the perfect balance of offerings, and we are certain that our cruisers will have a great time on board.”

Armonia promises to deliver a blend of classic Mediterranean charm and modern sophistication.

Designed to accommodate 2,500 guests in 976 cabins, the ship spans 13 decks filled with leisure, dining, and entertainment options.

Passengers can look forward to four restaurants, five bars and lounges, three outdoor bars, a cigar room, a casino, a disco, and two swimming pools. 

For families, there are dedicated kids’ and teens’ clubs, while evening entertainment includes live performances at the Teatro La Fenice. 

Guests can unwind at the MSC Aurea Spa, complete with Technogym-powered fitness facilities and a power walking track with ocean views.

Volk added that the arrival of the MSC Armonia underscores the growing popularity of cruising among South Africans. 

“We are happy to see that the local cruising scene continues to show steady and positive growth. We look forward to welcoming all our guests on board MSC Armonia in 2026.”
