In a significant career shift, Newzroom Afrika anchor Aldrin Sampear has announced his departure from the TV news channel to take up a new role as a media liaison at the Department of Tourism.
The announcement, made via his social media account on X (formerly Twitter), has elicited a range of reactions from the public as he transitions from broadcasting to public service under the guidance of Minister Patricia de Lille.
Sampear expressed pride in his contributions during his tenure at Newzroom Afrika, stating, “When I join companies, I fix what I can and always leave those organisations elevated. My departure from Newzroom Afrika is no different. I resigned because my skills have been sought for different challenges.”
In April, Sampear was suspended from Newzroom Afrika after he was involved in a road rage incident with a 20-year-old female student.
He later apologised and returned to the small screen almost a month later.
The announcement of his appointment was met with a mixed bag of support and scepticism from users on X.
One user, @ZizinjaAbelungu, raised questions regarding the transparency of the hiring process: “Aldrin Sampear is joining the Department of Tourism under the leadership of Patricia de Lille. As what? Where was the vacancy advertised? Who shortlisted (the) candidates? When were the interviews?”
Another commenter, @King_Nkuli, highlighted the context of Sampear's departure from Newzroom Afrika, referencing a road rage incident that led to his suspension earlier in the year.
“If tables were turned, dear Aldrin would be asking why someone with a propensity for violence is deemed fit to serve in government,” the user remarked.
Despite the mixed reactions, there were supportive sentiments as well.
@LekauSehoana congratulated Sampear, stating, “Congratulations and welcome to public service.”
Similarly, @UnityInSA offered well wishes, saying, “All the best in your new career. Changing careers can be exciting, challenging, and rewarding. Enjoy the journey.”
In his announcement, Sampear expressed gratitude for the opportunities that have shaped his life and career, attributing much of his success to the support he received from state policies.
He reflected, “This beautiful nation has done so much for me. I’m indebted. State policies like social grants and free primary healthcare helped pull me out of poverty, and journalism was the vehicle. Kasie FM, my first broadcasting home, was itself supported by a state agency, the MDDA.”
Concluding on a personal note, he added, “My life is a testimony of God’s love for us, and now I get to say THANK YOU in a BIG WAY and help pull more people up with me. I’m so damn proud of this little boy. Baby se kind. Remember to love each other and lead with compassion."
