Hailing from Woodlands, Montclair, Durban, Thandeka Nompumelelo Mkhwanazi, better known as TDK Macassette, is a pioneering South African musician, DJ, and media personality who has left an unforgettable imprint on the Gqom and Amapiano music scenes.
TDK Macassette’s passion for performance was evident from a young age — she sang in her church's Sunday school and thrived in drama throughout her school years. Her artistic drive extended into her academic journey, leading her to earn a BTech in Communications Management from the Durban University of Technology.
In 2018, TDK Macassette made her mark in the music industry by signing with Universal Music Group and releasing her debut single, Domoroza, featuring Mnqobi Yazo. The track introduced her unique style, blending the traditional sounds of Gqom with fresh, modern beats that instantly caught the attention of fans
Speaking to The Star, TDK Macassette shared that she took time to refine her craft and elevate her brand, paving the way for a powerful return. Now stepping into a new era as an independent artist, she has secured a strategic partnership with international distributor and label Empire. This isn’t just a comeback — it’s a declaration that she’s in full control of her career.
“I just had to go back to the drawing board, working on enhancing and trying to elevate my brand as a whole.”
She shared that the highlight of her career has been witnessing the growth of her brand, taking it to new heights with each step. Additionally, performing on stages alongside music legends has been an unforgettable experience for her.
The GqomPiano artist revealed that her latest track, Sorry Makhe, was inspired by a moment when her mother called her during a studio session. Her friends, noticing the call, playfully started saying, "nanguMamake," which sparked the idea for the song.
“Crazy thing it was all vibes in studio and my mother calling when I was brainstorming on my lyrics, friends in studio started saying 'nanguMamake' saying my phone was ringing, then all of a sudden I started saying 'bizuMamakhe” then the rest was history,” she said.
