Umhlanga residents have lodged objections to a proposal for the installation of bingo terminals on Lagoon Drive.
According to a newspaper advert an application was made to eThekwini Municipality for Special Consent for a place of entertainment that would feature up to 150 electronic bingo terminals and 30 limited payout machines at an existing commercial office site located at 4 Lagoon Drive, Umhlanga Rocks.
Members of the public were invited to lodge written objections by September 15.
Local resident Sandra Papale in her objection raised the issue of public safety and crime, the operation of gaming infrastructure in a commercial office zone, the risk of gambling addiction and the potential impact on tourism.
"Umhlanga Rocks is a key tourist destination. Introducing gambling may deter visitors and negatively affect local businesses reliant on tourism revenue.
"We urge the municipality to reject this application, to protect community safety, youth welfare, and economic interests," said Papale.
The Umhlanga Ratepayers and Residents Association (URRA) also lodged a formal objection on behalf of its members.
Terri MacLarty, chairperson of the Umhlanga Ratepayers & Residents Association said residents have repeatedly voiced opposition to gambling-related developments.
"Our objection is based on several concerns. The introduction of bingo and slot machine operations is likely to increase problem gambling, alcohol abuse, and related social issues within a residential and tourism-focused area.
"Lagoon Drive is the heart of Umhlanga’s premier beachfront and tourism zone. A gambling facility of this nature is out of character with the family-friendly, leisure, and hospitality environment that the area is known for," said MacLarty.
Such establishments often attract opportunistic crime and could undermine existing efforts to improve safety and security in Umhlanga, added MacLarty.
Loizos Chambi, managing director of Star Bingo KZN, trading as Kings Gaming and Entertainment said the premises at 4 Lagoon Drive will operate as a licensed bingo entertainment venue with a restaurant and bar.
"While Bingo and electronic gaming form the core of the operation, this is not solely a gambling establishment. Our model is a destination that combines food, beverage, and entertainment in a secure and well-managed environment.
"We are aware of objections raised by some members of the community. Their concerns around gaming addiction, alcohol use, and safety are issues we take very seriously. The industry is highly regulated, and we are bound by strict license conditions that include responsible gaming measures, Corporate Social Investment contributions, and Skills Development initiatives. We are also committed to ensuring peace of mind, providing high levels of security within the establishment and the surrounding area, employment and investment in the area," said Chambi.
He said their plan is to create jobs, stimulate the local economy, and work alongside residents to address concerns.
"Unfortunately, much of the opposition has been fuelled by misinformation, particularly on social media, where much of what has been circulated is misleading or untrue," said Chambi.
He said his company holds a license issued by the KwaZulu-Natal Gaming and Betting Board, adding that the current application was to relocate their existing eThekwini license, which they previously operated at Southway Mall, in Seaview, to 4 Lagoon Drive, Umhlanga.
Chambi said the site on Lagoon Drive is an existing commercial property being repurposed.
eThekwini Municipality did not respond by the time of publication.
