Gavin Hunt, a renowned South African football coach, has shared insights into his career and some of the significant moments that have shaped, revealing an intriguing offer he received from one of the country’s most prominent football clubs, Orlando Pirates.

Reflecting on this, Hunt opened up about the circumstances surrounding the offer, as well as the challenges he faced during his time at Kaizer Chiefs.

In a recent interview with Soccerbeat, Hunt revealed that he once had the opportunity to coach Orlando Pirates after receiving a direct call from the club’s chairman, Irvin Khoza.

“Yes, Pirates offered me the job. I was standing on the training ground at Swallows, true story, and the chairman phoned me. I’m talking about 2004 or 2005. Yes, he phoned me,” said Hunt

“I didn’t think I wasn’t ready at the time; I just felt we were doing well. We were in the top four, so why move now? But it was a very nice, cordial conversation. I think it was in 2005.”

Hunt also opened up about the challenges he faced at Chiefs, particularly during a difficult period that included a FIFA transfer ban and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. “You know, with Covid-19, the FIFA ban, and the whole story, they are a great club. They needed a rebuild like they are doing now just like I said four years ago,” Hunt explained.

“And I’m sure they will have success. I mean, if you look at the support base, they’ve got a nice following. I played three derbies with no one in the stadium. "We had a ban and players were not available. (Samir) Nurkovic was the top goal scorer the year before. It was difficult. (Khama) Billiat broke his leg, and we had nothing as a backup. It's well-documented. And the Champions League run was fantastic.” said Hunt
