Cape Town City face a do-or-die clash against Magesi FC in their final PSL promotion/relegation playoff match at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday.
City’s chances of returning to the Betway Premiership are hanging by the thinnest of threads after they lost both their opening matches to Milford FC and Magesi FC. This left the Citizens rooted to the bottom of the PSL play-off table. They managed to give themselves a lifeline when they beat Milford FC 1-0 away last weekend to earn three valuable points.
Jan Vreman’s side are now level with Magesi and can move up to six points to join Milford FC at the top of the table, should they emerge victorious on Wednesday (kick-off 3pm). However, even victory would still leave City in a precarious position, with Magesi FC and Milford FC set to meet each other in the final playoff game at the Seshego Stadium on Saturday.
Magesi, who finished 15th in the Betway Premiership last season, have the advantage heading into the final play-off rounds.
The Limpopo-based side are in control of their own destiny, as victories over City and Milford would result in an immediate return to the Betway Premiership. Club development coach Tlou Segolela is taking it all in his stride, despite Milford FC currently heading the standings.
"At this stage, we just have to deal with the games that we are going to play. We just need to win our remaining games," Segolela said. "It's a very difficult challenge that we are facing, but it's a challenge that helps you become a better player.
“We just have to focus on our two games and make sure we win both of them. It is still very much in our hands. Milford will soon have only one game remaining, while we will have two. If we win our games, we will all be on nine points."
