That Manchester United is a team in crisis is no doubt, and one former player has suggested one of the main reasons for their poor performance this season.

The Red Devils find themselves way down in 14th position on the log, as they are some 34 points behind table toppers Liverpool.

Since Ruben Amorim took over as coach in November, it’s been mostly a struggle as he has instituted a new formation at the club.

Former United star Sammy McIlroy who played for the club from 1971 to 1982, however, has pinpointed why he believes the results have not gone the team’s way.

Uncertainty

“The new manager has come in and, obviously, he’s got his own system, but at present I don’t think he knows who his best XI should be,” McIlroy told SportsBoom.com in an exclusive interview.

“That’s my opinion, but as yet I don’t think he knows who his best three centre-backs are and his two wingbacks, which is very important to his system. I still think he’s thinking about those positions and got things on his mind - and he’s not 100% sure yet.”

Amorim, however, can be credited for sticking to his guns as he seeks long-term improvement over immediate gains believed McIlroy.

“I think this is what Amorim has said to them, but for whatever reason it’s not really working for them at the minute. This manager is brave at the end of the day; he’s not frightened to make decisions. If you don’t play ball and play the way he wants you to play, well then you’ll suffer the consequences.”
