The Soweto giants will once again split the country in two as they renew their fierce rivalry.

The stands will be packed to capacity with the intensity felt in every corner of the FNB Stadium as a rivalry built on decades of history is set to be reignited this coming Saturday (kick-off 3.30pm).

Here, Obakeng Meletse looks at five key talking points ahead of the clash.

Both sides perfectly set for a good spectacle.

Both teams have lost two of their last five matches with three victories each in the Betway Premiership. Currently second on the log, Orlando Pirates have been on CAF Champions League duty over the last couple of months and that will give them the edge heading into the derby as they have been exposed to tougher opponents regularly.

Chiefs have had fewer minutes in comparison to Pirates, but their newfound momentum in their last two encounters has seen them occupy fifth position in the log as well as make the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup and that will give them a huge amount of confidence on Saturday.

Will Chiefs have an ace up their sleeve with Sirino?

The transfer window opened, gained momentum and it's nearing the end, but there haven’t been any major moves from Chiefs. Many of their faithful will be happy to see Gaston Sirino return to action as he was their most exciting signing in the previous window, even though he hasn’t lived up to the expected heights.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder hasn’t had much game time off late but his return against ABC Motsepe Foundation side Free Agents FC could be a good indicator heading to the crunch match, as he can be the catalyst for his teams victory aspirations.

Battle of South African young talents

There has been a lot of light on the likes of Wandile Duba, Mduduzi Shabalala and Mfundo Vilakazi through some of the not-so-bright days in Naturena. These young talents have had to do their best to drag a chain of their team's challenges since the start of the season and despite a few shortfalls here and there.

They have done fairly well to see their side within the top five as the season approaches the halfway mark. Relebohile Mofokeng, on the other hand, has been a spark of brilliance in everything he has done since joining up with the senior Pirates team.

Together with another young talent, Mohau Nkota, they may just have the one over the Chiefs trio, especially with the type of competition they have faced recently.

Depth in squads will separate the two teams.

With every battle for local supremacy, the encounter will naturally have high intensity but the best tactician on the day will reign supreme.

Orlando Pirates, with their participation in the Champions League and other domestic competitions, will have the upper hand in terms of having a stronger bench, plus with the benefit of playing more games. They will also have the luxury of having game-ready players on the bench.

Amakhosi, on the other hand, have had their challenges; they are still trying to find themselves in terms of their style of play and a settled eleven and they might just fall short in having the necessary impact they need from the bench.

More than just a battle

Pirates did a double over Chiefs last season and they are currently in a heated battle against Mamelodi Sundowns for the league title.

They will go into the contest as the favourites, but they cannot afford to underestimate their opponents, as points dropped on the day will not only give away bragging rights but could potentially be a blow for their league aspirations.

A win for Chiefs could bring them within one point behind Polokwane City before they kick off their match against Chippa United later the same day, and they can somehow get their shaky season back on track.
