As Qatar Airways celebrates two decades of service in South Africa, the airline continues to strengthen its commitment to the region’s growth.

QATAR Airways, the only five-star global airline based in the Middle East - has had its busiest festive season ever in South Africa as it marks 20 years of service to the country. In the two weeks between 22 December 2024 and 6 January 2025, the World’s Best Airline, as voted by Skytrax in 2024, moved 84,000 passengers to and from Africa – a near 100% increase from the same period in 2019-2020 before the Covid19 pandemic.

Qatar Airways Chief Commercial Officer, Thierry Antinori, said: “This landmark achievement demonstrates Qatar Airways’ commitment to increasing connectivity across Africa, as well as the rising demand for our award-winning travel experience.

“For this milestone to come at a time when we are also marking our 20th year of flying to South Africa makes it even more special. For two decades now, we have endeavoured to build a strong, lasting relationship with South Africa including by being a reliable partner to the country during the pandemic, and we are keen to help further foster the country’s bright economic future and remain dedicated to contributing to its exciting growth ahead, including through our partnership and investment with Airlink.”

The airline sees nearly 100% growth in passengers and commemorates its anniversary with a special 20% ticket discount.

To celebrate the airline’s milestone anniversary, travellers from South Africa are also able to fly to more than 170 destinations through the World’s Best Airport, Hamad International Airport – also the only five-star airport in the Middle East - with discounted tickets. Between 15-22 January 2025, up to 20% discount is available to mark 20 years of unparalleled service.

The airline serves Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban with up to 33 weekly flights. Qatar Airways first flew to South Africa on 16 January 2005, when it opened routes to Johannesburg and Cape Town. Since then, the airline has seen passenger demand grow strongly, with flights between Cape Town and Johannesburg moving from 60-75% capacity in 2019, to 90% in the last 12 months.

Whether it's investing in South African business such as Airlink, or talent, as demonstrated through the recruitment of young chefs from the prestigious Capsicum Culinary Studio, or weaving traditional flavours such as biltong beef soup, lamb potjie or bunny chow into its on-board menu, Qatar Airways continues to champion South Africa throughout its service.

The last two decades have also seen Qatar Airways Cargo facilitating South African trade by exporting produce across the globe, as well as repatriating animals as part of vital wildlife conservation efforts.
