A Canadian tourist was fatally shot during a bush braai experience at the Kruger National Park, with police now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that the 69-year-old tourist approached a concession operator who was holding a rifle and asked whether it was a real firearm.
“It is alleged that the 69-year-old male tourist approached the concession operator, who was holding a rifle, and asked if it was a real firearm. While the operator was demonstrating that it was a real rifle, the firearm reportedly discharged. The bullet struck the tourist in the upper body. He was unfortunately certified dead at the scene,” SAPS said.
The tourist was declared dead at the scene, and investigators are now working to establish the exact circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
In a statement, SANParks revealed that he was also part of a group booked from outside the park and had only entered the Kruger National Park for a bush braai experience hosted by a private concession operator.
“The guest was part of a group booked outside the park and only came in for a bush braai offered by a private concession with a valid permit to operate the facility within the park,” SANParks said.
