Media personality Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye has been released on R5 000 bail after the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg granted an urgent application for his release, following his arrest over an alleged confrontation with an e-hailing driver in Edenvale.
According to police, the incident unfolded after an e-hailing driver dropped off a female passenger at a residence in Edenvale.
National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said: “It is alleged that at approximately 7.30am, the e-hailing driver had transported a female passenger to a residence in Edenvale when he was confronted by the suspect, who accused him of being involved in a romantic relationship with his girlfriend.”
She alleged that the confrontation escalated when the driver was prevented from leaving.
“The suspect allegedly forced the e-hailing driver into his vehicle and prevented him from leaving. During the incident, the suspect reportedly discharged a firearm in the direction of the driver. The e-hailing driver managed to escape unharmed and immediately drove to a nearby police station to report the matter,” Mathe said.
The driver was not injured, and his complaint led to Maarohanye’s arrest on 14 June 2026.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Maarohanye faces a charge of pointing anything likely to lead a person to believe that it is a firearm. According to the prosecuting authority, police subsequently searched his residence, seized a pellet gun, and arrested him.
Police have also linked Maarohanye to additional charges arising from the same incident, including kidnapping, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and defeating the ends of justice. Following his arrest, Maarohanye brought an urgent application before the High Court, raising concerns over the delay in his appearance before the Germiston Magistrate's Court and seeking bail pending his first court appearance.
On 16 June 2026, the High Court granted the application and ordered his release on R5 000 bail. The matter has since been postponed to 22 June 2026 in the Germiston Magistrate's Court for further investigation.
“The NPA remains committed to ensuring that the matter is dealt with fairly, impartially and in accordance with the law, while safeguarding the interests of justice,” the prosecuting authority said.
Maarohanye’s latest arrest adds to a history of legal troubles. In 2012, he was convicted for his role in a crash that claimed the lives of four schoolchildren. More recently, in 2024, charges of rape, attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm were withdrawn against him.
The NPA said it would continue to pursue the matter in line with the interests of justice as investigations continue.
