The South African Heroes Awards 2025 is set to be a star-studded affair, celebrating two eminent figures whose dedication to justice, empowerment and advocacy continues to inspire the nation.
The 7th annual awards ceremony will take place on November 29, 2025, at M1 Studios in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, with the celebrations hosted by the dynamic media personality Samora Mangesi and the talented actress-singer Gabisile Tshabalala.
It is revealed that this year’s prestigious event will shine a spotlight on two extraordinary individuals: Seth Mazibuko and Zola Mbatha, whose unwavering commitment to uplifting communities and championing the cause of justice has earned them well-deserved recognition.
Seth Mazibuko, renowned for his pivotal role in the 1976 Soweto Uprising, will be awarded the Leader of Influence Award. As a key figure in this historic student-led protest against the oppressive use of Afrikaans in schools, Mazibuko emerged as a beacon of hope for young South Africans. Today, he serves as a representative of the June 16 Foundation, where he continues to mentor students and nurture future leaders.
Reflecting on his honour, Mazibuko stated, “I’m humbled and grateful to be honoured with this award. In preserving the legacy of 1976, I work with young people through the June 16 Foundation, focusing on education, economic participation, and social cohesion.” His activism surrounding the importance of education and community unification remains a key focus, inspiring generations to engage actively in societal change.
Meanwhile, Mbatha, a respected attorney and the founder of Legacy Yezibaya and Community Legal Clinics, is set to receive the Rights Activist of the Year Award. Through her network of legal clinics, Mbatha has tirelessly advocated for improved access to justice, particularly for the elderly and those struggling to navigate the complexities of the legal system.
She expressed her heartfelt appreciation for her recognition, saying, “I’m grateful to the South African Heroes Awards for this amazing and empowering honour. I cannot express with sufficient words my gratitude and look forward to enjoying this journey.” Her work exemplifies the critical need for legal representation and education among the most vulnerable in society.
Initiated by Amanda Matshaka, the South African Heroes Awards aims to celebrate the unsung heroes of South Africa, ordinary citizens performing extraordinary deeds that profoundly impact their communities. “The vision for the awards is to celebrate people who go above and beyond to improve the lives of those around them,” Matshaka explained. “We honour unsung heroes who make a lasting difference in society.”
In addition to the awards ceremony, attendees can look forward to captivating performances from a stellar lineup of artists, including Brenden Praise, Khanyo Maphumulo, Gab & Mo, Ndo Dlakadla, and Lungi Shezi, making for an unforgettable evening of celebration and recognition.
