As Nelson Mandela Day approaches, the spirit of giving and community service permeates South Africa. REMAX Southern Africa invites individuals and communities to step up and embrace this year's theme, “It's in Your Hands,” by dedicating at least 67 minutes to serve others in remembrance of Madiba's extraordinary 67 years of public service.
This annual day of action provides a unique opportunity to address pressing social issues, combat poverty, and inspire lasting change. Here are some impactful ways to honour Mandela's legacy through community involvement:
Support the REMAX Coats & Cans Drive: This initiative encourages community members to donate warm clothing, blankets, and non-perishable food items, particularly during the colder months. Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of REMAX Southern Africa, emphasises, “Our REMAX Foundation hosts an annual Coats & Cans Drive to support vulnerable communities.”
Donations can be dropped off at participating REMAX offices until the end of July, and will be distributed to local shelters and organisations.
For those unable to contribute physically, assistance via the GiveUnity app is available, allowing individuals to contribute R250 for a coat or R30 for a can of food. Additionally, donors will enter a lucky draw for a chance to win a one-night stay at Kloofzicht Lodge, including a sunrise hot air balloon ride.
Join the Mandela Day Walk & Run: On July 19, 2025, individuals can join thousands in the Nelson Mandela Foundation's Mandela Day Walk and Run, held at DP World Wanderers Stadium. With three distances to choose from, 5km, 10km, and 21km, participants can enjoy a course that traverses iconic landmarks such as the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Madiba’s former residence. Entry fees range from R100 to R200, and every step taken contributes to celebrating Mandela's legacy of unity and compassion.
Organise a community cleanup: Rising to the challenge of fostering a healthier environment can take the form of communal clean-up events in local parks, beaches, or other public spaces. Not only does this help beautify communities, but it also strengthens relationships among residents. Social media platforms are excellent resources for finding or initiating such events.
Find a local cause: Many local organisations await support, whether it's providing companionship at retirement homes, volunteering at animal shelters, or assisting with children’s reading programmes. Engaging in these acts of kindness allows for meaningful connections and the opportunity to uplift those in need.
“Mandela Day is an important reminder of our shared responsibility to uplift others and play our part towards creating lasting change,” concludes Goslett.
“Every effort, no matter how small, counts towards making a difference.”
