So, we’ve officially reached that moment in parenthood. You know, the one where the cute little milk teeth are becoming wriggly and starting to fall out. One evening, my son bursts into the room, excitement written all over his face: “Mommy, look!!! My tooth is loose!” His eyes were as big as a full moon. I couldn’t help but smile, feeling a combination of joy and nostalgia as I realised how fast he's growing.

As a mom who’s navigated the world of folk tales and childhood myths, I’ve come to appreciate how these stories encourage imagination — and sometimes, good behavior. Take the classic Tooth Fairy, for instance. In most households, the fairy leaves a coin or small treat in exchange for a lost tooth. But in our home, things are a little different.

“You know,” I said to my son, “Instead of a fairy, you have a mouse who comes to collect your teeth. That’s because boys have a mouse, not a fairy.”

A mouse?!” he blinked, wide-eyed. “What’s his name?”

“Oh, his name is Mister Sparkle,” I said, trying to stay serious. “He loves sparkly, clean teeth. So, you better brush really well!”

Now, I’ll be the first to admit: I needed a way to keep the tooth-brushing habit alive and well. And, well, the mouse is a bit cheaper than a fairy — especially when you’ve got a house full of loose teeth. It’s a win-win. Who knew a tooth mouse could be more cost-effective than a glittering fairy?

In all seriousness, Mister Sparkle has worked wonders. My son is suddenly much more motivated to brush his teeth, and I hear him cheerfully say, “If I want more money, I need my teeth to sparkle!” He’s practically polishing his teeth to a shine.

"Sparkly teeth mean more money, right, Mommy?" he asks, grinning from ear to ear.

My little-big boy is on the path of losing his milk teeth. So we introduced him to the tooth-mouse

“Exactly,” I say with a wink. “Mister Sparkle loves shiny teeth more than anything!”

But let’s not stop there. It’s not just the Tooth Mouse. The magic of Santa and the Easter Bunny also plays a big part in our household. Santa’s arrival isn’t just about gifts; it’s about the excitement that comes with doing good deeds throughout the year. I’ve casually mentioned, “Santa loves when kids do their best to be good. The better you behave, the more treats you’ll get!”

But last year, I almost got caught out. Little man asked, “How will Santa bring my presents if we don’t have a chimney?” Now, in a panic, I was mentally scrambling for an answer. Before I could respond, he figured it out himself: "You can leave the door unlocked until after he leaves, okay Mommy?"

I had to hold back a laugh. His imagination was in full force, and suddenly, the idea of leaving the door unlocked for Santa to deliver presents made perfect sense. The magic wasn’t in the chimney; it was in his belief.

And it isn’t just Santa. The Easter Bunny's visits have become more creative each year. As my son gets older, I can see how these legends evolve in his mind, fueling his imagination and giving him something to look forward to.

As a mom, I’ve come to see these folk tales as more than just stories — they’re tools for nurturing good habits and encouraging positive behavior. It’s not about the money or the candy (though I’ll admit, a little extra cash from Mister Sparkle doesn’t hurt). It’s about the lessons hidden in these myths: kindness, responsibility, and a little touch of magic.

Sometimes, though, it feels wrong. Like I’m blackmailing my little human into brushing his teeth with promises of money from a mouse. But hey, whatever works, right? 😅

So, while some may dismiss these stories as just fun tales, they serve a bigger purpose in our home. The Tooth Mouse, Santa, and the Easter Bunny are more than just excitement — they’re helping shape the lessons of growth, imagination, and responsibility.

As I tucked my son into bed that night, I watched him smile his toothless grin, eyes still sparkling with excitement. “Mister Sparkle will love my teeth tomorrow!” he said, already planning his next big brushing session.
