KwaZulu-Natal authorities have begun mop-up operations across the province following devastating storms that left a trail of destruction, particularly in the eThekwini Metro.
The severe weather has resulted in flooding, infrastructure damage, and power outages, with officials urging residents to remain on high alert as weather warnings remain in effect.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has mobilized emergency teams across the province, particularly in eThekwini Metro, where the worst of the storm was felt.
"The heavy downpour flooded roads, uprooted trees, and disrupted essential services, leaving thousands of residents stranded or without power," said Cogta spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila.
Tragically, the storm claimed at least one life when a woman was swept away in her vehicle in Pinetown.
Her body and the car were recovered by Search and Rescue teams in the early hours of the morning.
MEC for Cogta, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, expressed his condolences to the grieving family.
"We urge all residents to heed the weather warnings and exercise extreme caution. These conditions pose a significant risk to human life and livestock," Buthelezi warned.
The Provincial Disaster Management Centre is working with municipalities to assess the full extent of the damage, with initial reports showing severe impact on road infrastructure and service delivery.
Technical teams are working to restore power in affected areas, though challenges remain due to ongoing severe weather.
A Level 6 weather warning is still active for eThekwini Metro, as well as Ugu, iLembe, and uMgungundlovu Districts. Other parts of the province remain under a Level 4 alert, keeping emergency teams on high alert.
"Disaster Management teams will continue to monitor all major routes and areas prone to disaster-related incidents, ensuring a swift and effective response to any further emergencies," said the department.
Residents are urged to stay indoors where possible, avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges, and remain updated with official safety alerts.
