An Orange Level 6 and Yellow Level for disruptive rain and severe thunderstorms respectively has been issued for KwaZulu-Natal.

These heavy rains are expected from Thursday evening into Friday.

Due to the intensity of the warning by SA Weather Services (SAWS), KZN must take any precautions they can to avert disaster to their homes and more.

"We currently have an 80% chance of showers and thundershowers for the south-eastern parts of KZN. That will be Ugu, eThekwini, and Ilembe districts," said SAWS forecaster Ayanda Nsele.

As rainy seasons become more intense and unpredictable as weather patterns evolve, homeowners have an increasingly tough burden of protecting their homes and loved ones from the risks that accompany them.

Harcourts South Africa presented vital tips on how individuals should protect their homes from potential safety hazards induced by heavy rain or flooding.

"The key to weathering a rainy spell lies in taking proactive steps to protect your property and family. These tips are designed to help homeowners identify potential hazards and implement preventive measures to avoid costly and dangerous situations," said the chief executive of Harcourts South Africa, Richard Gray.

Flood prevention

To avoid barriers that might cause flooding, people should remove debris from their gutters, drains, and downspouts. Ensuring that the home can properly dispose of excess water is an important step in flood prevention.

Roof and leak inspection

Regularly examining the roof for missing or damaged shingles, as well as potential leak areas, is crucial. Early identification and repair of roof issues might assist in preventing water damage inside your home.

Foundation protection

Water accumulation around the foundation can cause significant damage. Creating a slope away from your home's foundation with proper landscaping will help to divert water away from the building, lowering the danger of foundation damage.

Insurance review

Knowing what your insurance covers before disaster strikes may provide peace of mind and expedite the recovery process.
