The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration is briefing the media on the government’s progress in managing and addressing migration-related matters.

The briefing will provide an update on developments in migration management and outline key interventions undertaken by the state to strengthen its approach to ongoing challenges.

This media update follows nationwide protests against irregular migration held across the country on June 30. During those demonstrations, protestors called for stricter enforcement of immigration laws, stronger border controls, and the deportation of undocumented foreign nationals. The protests took place across several provinces, including Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.

The committee has previously acknowledged that many South Africans hold genuine concerns regarding unemployment, irregular migration, service delivery strain, border management, and public safety, maintaining that these matters must be addressed through lawful and democratic processes.

Government has also reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying efforts against illegal immigration, border-related crime, and human trafficking, while ensuring that all enforcement measures strictly comply with the Constitution and the rule of law.

Furthermore, the IMC issued a stern warning to anyone using the demonstrations as a cover for violence or looting.

"Those who chose to exploit the marches to commit criminal acts will face the full might of the law," the committee said.

The committee added that it will continue working alongside law enforcement agencies to dismantle criminal syndicates involved in human trafficking, labor exploitation, corruption, and other offenses tied to irregular migration.

The IMC is expected to provide comprehensive details on these interventions and upcoming policy developments during Sunday’s media briefing.
