The Border Management Authority (BMA) has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic bus accident near Beitbridge on Tuesday, which claimed the life of a bus driver and left several passengers injured during a repatriation operation.
According to the authority, the bus was transporting 65 foreign nationals from Durban to Musina as part of a coordinated process to facilitate their repatriation through the Beitbridge Port of Entry. The vehicle was en route to be processed by relevant authorities when the accident occurred.
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver lost control of the bus, resulting in a crash that proved fatal. Emergency medical teams confirmed that the driver died at the scene, while seven passengers sustained injuries and were transported for further medical treatment.
The BMA said multiple agencies responded swiftly to the incident, including the Musina Local Municipality, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Musina Traffic Management authorities, and emergency services, all of whom assisted in stabilising the scene and providing urgent care.
Acting Commissioner of the Border Management Authority, Major General (Rtd) David Chilembe, conveyed condolences to those affected, describing the incident as a painful loss.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. On behalf of the Border Management Authority, I extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased driver during this difficult time,” Chilembe said.
“We also wish the injured passengers a full and speedy recovery and thank all emergency responders and law enforcement officials who acted swiftly to provide assistance at the scene.”
The BMA confirmed it is working closely with law enforcement and other relevant authorities as investigations continue into the cause of the accident.
“The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the relevant law enforcement authorities.”
The authority said it will continue to support the ongoing response while ensuring the safe continuation of the repatriation process under Operation HI-TIVISE, which includes reporting mechanisms for illegal activities.
Further details are expected as investigations proceed.
