The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has been deployed to Hillbrow in Johannesburg following escalating tensions during a nationwide protest against illegal immigration.

The deployment comes amid growing concerns over public safety after demonstrations intensified, prompting security forces to reinforce the area.

SANDF members have been deployed in support of the South African Police Service (SAPS) as efforts continue to stabilise the situation and prevent further unrest.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Excellerate Security National Command Centre, the security company confirmed the military presence in Hillbrow.

"The Excellerate Security National Command Centre can confirm that members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have been deployed to the Hillbrow area of Johannesburg," said a spokesperson said.

According to the statement, the deployment follows reports that the operational situation in the area has continued to deteriorate.

"The SANDF is supporting the South African Police Service as part of ongoing efforts to stabilise the area and maintain public order," the statement added.

The anti-illegal immigration protest has drawn significant attention, with demonstrators calling for stronger enforcement of immigration laws and action against undocumented foreign nationals. The increased security presence is aimed at preventing violence, protecting residents and businesses, and ensuring that law enforcement officers can carry out their duties safely.

Authorities have not yet disclosed how long the SANDF deployment will remain in place or whether additional resources will be sent to the area should tensions persist.

The Excellerate Security National Command Centre said it continues to monitor developments closely and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, avoid areas where security operations are underway, and follow instructions issued by law enforcement officials.
