The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health says all public health facilities across the province remain fully operational, with no disruptions or security incidents reported despite concerns surrounding nationwide protest action linked to the widely publicised June 30 shutdown calls.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the department sought to reassure residents that hospitals, clinics and other public healthcare facilities across KwaZulu-Natal's 11 health districts were functioning normally and continuing to provide uninterrupted services.

“The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health wishes to assure members of the public that all public health facilities across the province remain fully operational, with no protest-related incidents reported as of this morning,” the department said.

The province has heightened monitoring measures as authorities keep watch on developments related to demonstrations associated with calls for action over illegal immigration.

While acknowledging citizens' right to protest, the department stressed that access to healthcare services remains a priority.

“While government continues to respect the constitutional right to peaceful protest, it remains committed to ensuring that essential healthcare services are not disrupted and that patients are able to access medical care without fear or inconvenience,” the statement read.

The department said healthcare workers had reported for duty and patient care services were continuing without interruption across the province.

“All health facilities across KwaZulu-Natal's 11 health districts are operating normally, with healthcare workers reporting for duty and patient services continuing uninterrupted,” it said.

As part of its preparedness measures, the department convened a virtual meeting with communications and public relations managers from all districts early on Tuesday to assess conditions on the ground and strengthen reporting systems.

“Earlier this morning, the Department convened a virtual meeting with Communications and Public Relations Managers from all districts to assess the situation and strengthen reporting mechanisms. Regular updates will be provided throughout the day should there be any significant developments,” the department said.

Health authorities added that they are working closely with provincial government structures, law enforcement agencies and other security stakeholders to safeguard healthcare facilities and ensure patient safety.

“As patient safety remains our top priority, the Department continues to work closely with the Provincial Government, law enforcement agencies and other security stakeholders to monitor the situation and safeguard patients, healthcare workers, visitors and critical health infrastructure.”

The department urged residents not to delay seeking medical attention and encouraged the public to obtain information from official government communication channels as monitoring efforts continue throughout the day.
