The City of Ekurhuleni says it is fully prepared for the planned march on Tuesday, June 30, with Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza urging protesters to exercise their constitutional rights peacefully and within the law.
The mayor confirmed that the municipality had activated comprehensive contingency measures involving law enforcement agencies and various City departments to safeguard residents, protect public infrastructure and maintain order throughout the demonstration.
“The right to protest is an important part of our democracy. However, this right comes with the responsibility to ensure that all actions remain within the confines of the law,” Xhakaza said.
While the statement did not identify the organisers or outline the specific reasons for the march, it said the City had been working closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the event proceeds safely.
The municipality also sought to reassure residents that municipal operations would continue as normal, with plans in place to ensure that essential services remain fully operational during the protest.
“Residents are assured that service delivery will continue without interruption. The City has activated operational plans to ensure that essential services remain available and that communities continue to receive the support they need during this period,” the statement said.
Xhakaza appealed to those taking part in the march to avoid violence, intimidation, damage to public or private property, disruption of essential services and any other unlawful conduct. He urged demonstrators to express their concerns peacefully and through lawful channels.
The planned march comes amid heightened public tensions ahead of South Africa’s local government elections in November, with growing frustration in many communities over service delivery, municipal governance and accountability.
In closing, Xhakaza reaffirmed the City’s commitment to engaging with residents and responding to community concerns.
“Ekurhuleni remains committed to listening to residents, addressing challenges, and working towards building a better Ekurhuleni,” he said.
