As South Africa heads into the Easter holiday period, the Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has issued a statement to prioritise the safety, dignity, and respect, especially for women, young people, and persons with disabilities, who remain among the most vulnerable.
"Let this Easter be a time where we reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect one another, especially those most at risk.
"No woman should feel unsafe, no young person should be exposed to harm, and no person with a disability should be left behind," she said.
The department emphasised that communities must act to prevent gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide, encourage responsible behaviour among youth, and ensure persons with disabilities are included and protected during all Easter activities.
Minister Chikunga further urged all South Africans to uphold road safety and social responsibility during the holidays.
"Together, we can build a society where safety, equality, and human dignity are not seasonal values, but a way of life," she said.
The department said it will continue working with law enforcement, civil society, and faith leaders to strengthen awareness and response mechanisms throughout the holiday period.
