Sky car needs new cable from overseas

Published

The sky car at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban has stopped working again due to a fault in the data cable, an official said on Monday.

"Unfortunately this data cable is specialised for the sky car and hence we have to order a replacement cable from overseas," Julie-May Ellingson, the head of Durban's strategic project unit and 2010 programme, said in a statement.

Ellingson said the defects in the cable were detected before the Easter weekend.

"Regrettably, delivery has been significantly delayed due to the Icelandic volcanic eruption which has prevented flights from Europe from operating," Ellingson said.

She said repairs were expected to be completed by May 7.

Specialists were working to reopen the sky car before this date, Ellingson said.

Last month, the Department of Labour gave the Ethekwini municipality 60 days to make sure the sky car was safe, after it got stuck, leaving people stranded.

A labour department inspector found that there was no preventative maintenance plan for the sky car's hydraulic brakes and they had not been regularly checked which caused them to jam.

The department also found the indemnity notice at the stadium for the sky car had no legal standing.

The sky car had carried 80 000 visitors safely up and down the arc to the viewing platform 106m above the pitch, said Ellingson.

"Over the Easter weekend alone, nearly 4 000 people enjoyed Durban's newest attraction. Every single person has been safe in the sky car, undoubtedly one of the safest tourist attractions in South Africa," she said. - Sapa
