Crumbling infrastructure, including pothole-riddled roads, malfunctioning traffic lights, crime, a water crisis, poor service delivery, and financial mismanagement across Gauteng municipalities will top President Cyril Ramaphosa’s agenda as he meets with Gauteng government leaders.
Leaking sewer systems, uncollected waste, water throttling, and power cuts have become a constant reality for locals across the province, yet little has been done to address the problems.
The issues have been impacting residents' daily lives for years.
Municipalities in Gauteng are known for their poor state, with many battling corruption and inadequate service delivery.
The challenges have left residents struggling to find hope in resolving the issues they face daily.
Ramaphosa accompanied by Ministers and their deputies will commence his oversight meeting with the Provincial Executive Committee led by Premier Panyaza Lesufi on Thursday, March 6.
He will also engage with various stakeholders in the City of Johannesburg.
“The meeting will be the fourth engagement between the national executive and provincial governments following recent interactions between the President and the provincial governments of Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo,” Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said.
Ramaphosa will conclude the two-day meeting on Friday at the Joburg City Council.
“These engagements by the President seek to enhance intergovernmental coordination and improve service delivery in line with the priorities of the 7th Administration and the integration and partnership called for by the District Development Model,” Magwenya said.
The Gauteng province executive is expected to present its five-year programme, aligned with the priorities of the 7th Administration.
The meeting will also discuss various approaches to service delivery issues, including interventions at the local government level, and will include City of Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero and his Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs).
“This will be followed by a stakeholder engagement,” Magwenya added.
This comes a week after Ramaphosa hit the JMPD with a surprise visit during their crime prevention operation in the Joburg CBD.
