The African National Congress (ANC) has announced its renewed commitment to revitalising the party’s structures and rebuilding its influence in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) following disappointing results in the 2024 elections.

In a media briefing held at the ANC Provincial House in Durban, ANC leaders laid out their plans for restructuring and re-engaging with communities to restore the party's credibility and relevance.

This comes after ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula on Tuesday announced the newly reconfigured ANC KZN Provincial Task Team (PTT).

During the media briefing, ANC’s KZN leadership, including provincial coordinator Mike Mabuyakhulu, deputy coordinator Nomusa-Dube-Ncube, and convener Jeff Radebe, emphasised their commitment to bringing the people back to the movement.

This announcement came after an extensive meeting with the Global Child Trust Team on Monday, where the party strategised its approach to addressing internal and external challenges.

The leadership reaffirmed that the people of KZN must once again be at the centre of the party's future and that ANC structures must be rebuilt from the grassroots up.

“We cannot take our people for granted any longer,” said Radebe.

“The ANC must work hard to re-establish itself as the center of power in KwaZulu-Natal. It’s a generational mission that requires unity, respect for traditional leadership, and engagement with religious communities to rebuild trust.”

The ANC has identified several key tasks for the upcoming months, including efforts to retain existing supporters, regain voters lost in 2024, and restore its relevance in KZN’s local governance.

The leadership aims to transform municipalities, particularly the Etewimi Metro, which plays a crucial role in the region. They also emphasised the importance of working closely with civil society, alliance partners, and local stakeholders to turn things around.

One major focus of the leadership is eliminating corruption within the party. “We have no space for corruption within this leadership,” said Radebe.

“We will not tolerate anyone using their positions for personal gain, and we will lead by example to restore integrity.”

The ANC also reaffirmed its commitment to the Renewal Charter, a framework that underscores the party’s dedication to rebuilding and reinvigorating the movement.

The Asiye Ekhaya Campaign, aimed at reconnecting the ANC with its grassroots support base, will be a central part of this renewal effort.

The leadership also stressed the need for an intensified political education campaign to strengthen the understanding of the National Democratic Revolution among ANC members and supporters.

“We are ready to mobilise across all sectors of society, from white, coloured, and Indian communities to our traditional alliance partners, such as Cosatu and the SACP,” said Radebe.

“Our task is to bring the people back to the ANC, restore their confidence, and ensure that we have effective leadership at all levels.”

As part of its short-term strategy, the ANC will soon receive an in-depth State of the Organisation Report, which will provide an objective analysis of the party’s current standing.

This report will guide the leadership in making informed decisions and prioritising interventions that address the most pressing issues facing KZN communities.

Additionally, the ANC said it will undertake a comprehensive audit and verification process to ensure the integrity of its membership records, with training sessions scheduled for party officials.

Furthermore, the ANC's renewed leadership in KwaZulu-Natal said they are committed to rebuilding the party’s influence and addressing the challenges of governance, internal reform, and community engagement in the province.
