Medicare24 CEO Mike van Wyk will not testify at the Madlanga Commission on Monday after his legal team revealed that he was hospitalised following panic attacks and a psychiatric consultation.
His lawyer, Sandy du Plessis, told the commission that Van Wyk suffered panic attacks, consulted a psychiatrist on June 17, and was admitted to hospital on Sunday.
She said a doctor had recommended psychiatric treatment, prompting an urgent application to postpone his testimony.
Van Wyk was subpoenaed to appear before the commission on June 22.
His legal team has argued that he also requires additional time to prepare after receiving relevant documents late.
Proceedings were temporarily adjourned while commissioners awaited medical records and supporting documentation before deciding whether the hearing could continue.
The commission is investigating several matters involving Van Wyk and Medicare24, including allegations of irregular tender dealings, alleged links to underworld figure Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and claims of improper involvement in municipal and law enforcement affairs.
Evidence before the commission includes forensic findings linking Van Wyk to Matlala, who reportedly sought to acquire a Medicare24 franchise.
Investigators are also examining Medicare24's involvement in a cancelled R360-million SAPS health risk management tender in Tshwane that led to the arrests of several senior police officers.
Additional evidence includes WhatsApp messages allegedly showing Van Wyk advising suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi on drafting municipal memorandums of understanding.
The commission is expected to rule on the postponement request once all medical documentation has been reviewed.
