Madlanga Commission is expected to hear key testimony on Wednesday from Hawks commander Brigadier Campbell Nyuswa as its investigation into the disappearance of cocaine worth about R200 million enters a crucial stage.

Nyuswa is scheduled to appear before the commission as it continues probing the theft of 541kg of confiscated cocaine that vanished from a walk-in safe at the Hawks’ Port Shepstone offices in November 2021.

Proceedings are due to begin at 9:30am and will be led by evidence leaders Adv Lee Segeels-Ncube and Adv Mahlape Sello SC.

The brigadier has come under growing scrutiny during the inquiry after testimony revealed that he allegedly gave instructions for the seized drugs to be transported and stored at the Port Shepstone facility.

Evidence presented to the commission indicates the decision followed consultations with former Hawks head Major-General Lesetja Senona, who is currently suspended.

The commission is investigating how such a large quantity of high-value cocaine disappeared from a secure law enforcement facility, with a focus on drug storage procedures, crime scene management and accountability within the Hawks.

Wednesday’s hearing is expected to provide further insight into the decisions made before the drugs went missing and the circumstances surrounding the theft.

The inquiry will also soon turn its attention to Medicare24 CEO Mike van Wyk, who has been subpoenaed to testify next week following evidence about his association with alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

Investigators are also examining matters linked to a R360-million health risk management contract.

Meanwhile, Gauteng Traffic Chief Inspector Samuel Mashaba has been suspended following his appearance before the commission.
