Newly released court papers have revealed claims of a covert relationship between EFF leader Julius Malema and Crime Intel. boss Feroz Khan, alleging the pair worked together in efforts to remove a senior intelligence watchdog while exchanging sensitive information.

This raised questions about whether political influence and state intelligence play a role in influencing certain decisions.

The claims are contained in an affidavit by Tshepo Nyatlo, an investigator for the Madlanga Commission, which is examining allegations of misconduct within the crime intelligence and law-enforcement structures.

The allegations are that there was an alleged 2021 effort to remove then Inspector-General of Intelligence Isaac Dintwe.

According to the affidavit, Khan enlisted Malema's help and, through an intermediary, supplied questions for the EFF to ask in Parliament.

Investigators alleged the questions were designed to trap Dintwe and undermine his position.

The court papers also allege that Khan shared confidential police information with Malema during the same period.

The information reportedly related to a criminal complaint linked to the VBS Mutual Bank scandal and allegedly included the complainant's identity and home address.

The allegations stand in contrast to Malema's previous public statements.

The EFF leader has repeatedly described Khan as a longtime acquaintance from their ANC days and denied any wrongdoing in their relationship.

Neither allegation has been tested in court, and no findings have yet been made against either man.

The revelations come as pressure mounts on Khan ahead of his scheduled appearance before the commission on July 1.

The inquiry has reserved multiple days for his testimony, signalling that one of the most closely watched chapters of the investigation is only beginning.
