TWO-year-old Aariya Sewnarain is recovering after a serious fall from a creche balcony, with her family expressing gratitude for the support received during this challenging time.

Today is exactly a week since the incident.

While the toddler is out of danger, she has a long road ahead of her before she is her “bubbly and active self again,” her parents said today.

She was allegedly left unattended on the second storey of a creche in Chatsworth and fell through a gap in the balustrades of the balcony last Thursday.

She sustained serious head injuries, including a fractured skull, bleeding and blood clots on her brain.

Her dad, Atholl Sewnarain, said doctors gave him the good news yesterday that things looked positive for Aariya.

“God saved her. She is our miracle baby. We cannot explain how relieved we are. Our baby is recovering well and the doctors said she was out of the woods. But it is going to be a long journey until she is herself again. She is eating little amounts of food but wants to walk around and play.

“We have to closely monitor her because her body is still weak. Doctors are happy with her progress and recovery from the surgery and other procedures,” he added.

He said he was overwhelmed and grateful for the support he and his wife Shivana had received during the ordeal.

“It has been a traumatising week for us as a family. We are mentally drained. We appreciate the prayer and support from friends, family and the public. We are praying for the best and that she grows up strong and is able to fully recover from this.

“We know she is a fighter. We are thankful that police investigations are ongoing and we are supported by the law enforcement authorities to ensure that something like this does not happen to another child,” added Sewnarain.
