Since its launch in December 2023, Operation Vala Umgodi has made significant strides in tackling illegal mining activities across the country.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) highlights the invaluable role of its K9 Unit, showcasing the specialised skills of trained dogs in detecting explosives and narcotics.
With their heightened sense of smell and acute hearing, SAPS K9 dogs play a crucial role in high-risk operations, identifying dangerous substances in environments where human officers could be at risk.
To ensure top performance, SAPS K9 handlers undergo rigorous training, equipping them with the expertise needed to handle and care for their canine partners.
These dedicated officers, proudly wearing the dog handler's badge on the right, exemplify discipline, commitment, and service.

Among the K9 team are sniffer dogs Oubaas, Ziva, Lady, and Boby, working alongside their skilled handlers—Warrant Officer Nkwinika, Sergeant Shivuri, Sergeant Mmakola, and Sergeant Mashinini.
Together, they form part of the Mission Area Joint Operational Centre (MAJOC) roving team, supporting Tactical Joint Operational Centres (TACJOC) in provinces heavily affected by illegal mining.
Operation Vala Umgodi has already yielded impressive results:
- Over 18,000 suspects arrested, the majority being illegal foreign nationals
- 458 illegal firearms and more than 12,000 rounds of ammunition seized
- Confiscated drugs, explosives, vehicles, trucks, and uncut diamonds valued at over R32 million
As SAPS continues its relentless efforts, the K9 Unit remains a key asset, ensuring the success of Vala Umgodi’s mission to combat illegal mining and related crimes.
