A 29-year-old Nseleni man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for stabbing his elderly grandmother to death and burning her body following an argument at their home in January.
Ayanda Fulela, 29, was sentenced in the Greytown Regional Court to life imprisonment for murder, with an additional 10 years for desecrating a corpse.
Police spokesperson Constable Siyabonga Nkwanyana said that a missing person’s report was filed on January 2, after the elderly woman had not been seen for two days.
Investigators traced the case to her home, where suspicion quickly fell on her grandson, Ayanda Fulela.
"Upon further questioning, Fulela confessed to having stabbed his grandmother following a heated argument. In an attempt to conceal the crime, he then set her body on fire," said Nkwanyana.
The case was heard at the Greytown Regional Court, which found Fulela guilty of murder and violating a corpse.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, with an additional 10 years for desecrating the body.
The court also ruled that he was unfit to possess a firearm.
The South African Police Service in Kranskop praised the meticulous efforts of its detectives, particularly Detective Sergeant Thobelani Khoza, who led the investigation.
"Their diligent work ensured that all necessary evidence was effectively presented before the judiciary," said Nkwanyana.
