Authorities imposed a major crackdown on illegal traders in Ekurhuleni on Saturday, with scores of perishable and non-perishable goods confiscated in the Benoni and Wattville areas.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) said the operation, which took place between 6pm on Saturday, March 7, and 2am on Sunday, March 8, focused on unregistered traders operating at night, as well as those who have permits but are not trading in line with what is stipulated on their permits.

Fruits and vegetables, snacks and atchaar were confiscated, along with gas braai stoves, braai stands, chairs, tables and cooking pots. The confiscated goods were taken to the Brakpan and Boksburg EMPD pounds.

The operation swept through streets such as Tom Jones, Princess, and various places of entertainment around the Benoni CBD, while Mmamkete, Dube and Memorial Tambo streets in Wattville were also visited by the By-Law Compliance Unit authorities.

“The By-Laws Compliance Unit will continue with similar operations, to ensure that the City of Ekurhuleni stays safe and clean and that everyone abides by the rules of the law,” the EMPD said in a statement issued on Sunday.
