A 38-year-old foreign national has been arrested in Limpopo in a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, after being caught in possession of Kat drugs valued at R150,000 during a high-speed police pursuit in Mokopane.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the suspect was arrested on May 9, 2025, by members of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit after they received intelligence about drug sales in the Mokopane area.
The man was allegedly operating from a white Volkswagen Polo TSI registered in Limpopo.
Police spotted the suspect's vehicle along Thabo Mbeki Street and attempted to intercept him.
“Upon noticing police presence, the suspect attempted to evade arrest by speeding away, which led to a brief pursuit,” said Ledwaba.
The chase ended when police successfully stopped the vehicle.
A search of the car led to the discovery of a box of Kat drugs on the passenger seat, with an estimated street value of R150,000. The suspect was immediately arrested and is now facing charges of dealing in drugs and possession of drugs.
He is expected to appear before the Mokopane Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, applauded the officers and a private security company for their rapid and decisive action.
“This arrest is a clear demonstration of our unwavering commitment to ridding our communities of the scourge of drugs,” said Hadebe.
“We will continue to intensify our efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks operating in our province.”
Police said their operations against drug syndicates in Limpopo will continue as part of an ongoing crackdown on narcotics-related crimes.
