A body of 42-year-old man who had gone missing after he was caught in rip currents was found at Milnerton Beach in Cape Town.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said his body was taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
NSIR spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the man was found on Friday after he went missing in the surf zone at Milnerton Beach on Sunday, November 24.
Lambinon said the NSRI, Milnerton Surf lifeguards, City of Cape Town lifeguards, Western Cape Emergency Services, Rescue Squad Drone Unit and local security, assisted Police in the ongoing search operation during the week.
When the man went missing, he was in the company of his 28-year-old man who was rescued by a person using a NSRI pink rescue buoy. The man was not injured but was taken to hospital where he was treated for non-fatal drowning symptoms.
"It appears that the two men had been swimming when they were caught in rip currents. The unidentified good Samaritan who used the NSRI pink rescue buoy to rescue the one man is commended for his effort that saved a life," he said.
Lambinon said staff at a local restaurant and eyewitnesses raised the alarm and NSRI Table Bay, NSRI Bakoven and Coastwatchers West Coast were alerted
"Milnerton surf lifeguards launched an inflatable rescue boat while theNSRI Melkbosstrand launched the rescue craft Rotaries Gift and Sea Ranger 13, NSRI Bakoven launched the rescue craft Rescue 2 Alpha. Additional NSRI rescue swimmers responded," he said.
